It's ok to lift light weights. It allows you to practice technique and really focus on the movement. And yet, due to ego, very few people put their knees on the ground during press ups. Don't worry, it's ok. You're allowed to.
Try starting with regular press ups and then when you start to feel your form break down drop the knees to the ground and do a few more. Press ups with bad form are bad for the shoulders.
